Song of the Ëan Emily Nordberg 9780692752210 Books Reviews

Song of the Ëan is the story of a bored, spoiled young prince who goes on what should be a routine trip to collect tribute from an island province, only to become embroiled in its people's fight against an oppressive governor.  Over the course of the story, we see him change from a shallow, self-centered youth to a mature, brave, and generous man.  It's a remarkably believable character arc, and by the end of the book, I had grown very fond of him, even though at the beginning, I didn't like him much at all.

The ëan are the rebel forces, named for the eagles that assist them occasionally.  Their leader, called Auria, is a fierce young woman with a keen understanding of strategy, a compassionate heart, and a peerless mastery of hand-to-hand combat.  She gets her own beautiful character arc, and of the two main characters, she was by far my favorite.

This is Emily Nordberg's debut novel, and while her pacing is not always strong, her world-building and character development richly rewarded me.  I'm going to let my son read this now that I've finished it -- it's absolutely clean, aside from one mention of a minor character's mother having had a "reputation," which is exactly how it is phrased.  As my son loves fantasy and anything with strong male AND female characters, I think he's going to enjoy this -- possibly even more than I did!
Emily Nordberg did a amazing job on her first book. The characters are well developed and the story line is easy to follow. The book moves at a great pace and leaves the reader longing to read more from her amazing imagination. The interplay of magic, mystery, and "real life" work well and do not become overwhelming or hard to follow (as some fantasy novels can). The greatest part of this book is that the fantasy is low level enough that the reader could imagine this actually happening sometime in history (or the future). An enjoyable read for ALL ages.
I thoroughly enjoyed Emily Nordberg’s book and stayed up too late to finish it! A great balance of adventure, romance, and philosophy. The story is captivating and intriguing. Character development was paced well, as well as the revealing of the backstory – and I enjoyed the manner which was chosen to do so. I rarely read fantasy, but am longing to read more about Belond (a major character in the story), the people who live there and what happens in their future. These characters have stayed with me and I’ve missed them. This is a wonderful read for people of all ages.
While this is not my typical reading genre, I thoroughly loved this book enough to have it keep me up reading til midnight even the second time through! The part I most love about Emily's book book is the complexity of her characters. She creates such varying and real characters that by the end of the book they feel like friends. This ability to portray real personality and phenomenal character development left me extremely emotionally invested in the book throughout and especially at the end. This book absolutely keeps you turning the page wanting to know what happens to the people and to Belond in this thrilling and wholesome adventure which I can only describe as a pure joy.
Song of the Ëan is a well paced story with strong and interesting characters. Emily Nordberg manages to flesh out and develop the personalities of both the characters and of the island in which the larger portion of the story takes place without relying on cliches or tropes. The low-magic fantasy genre is well suited to the writing style of the novel, being approachable as well as dynamic in it's language. The result is a well crafted story that can be read and enjoyed by any age without compromising the tension or thoughtfulness of the story.
Emily Nordberg did an outstanding job with this book! I was hesitant to read it because of the cover but the title intrigued me! She grabs your attention on the first page and she leads you on this incredible journey to the end. She has fantastic character development and has so many various character personalities to have multiple favorite characters! I loved how she had a lot of dialogue to let you know the characters more. If you love fantasy and mystery and adventure and a hint of romance than this is the perfect book for you to read! I usually read books pretty slowly and read them in a weak or two but I read The Song of Ëan in 4 days because I couldn't put it down! It fascinated me that a girl just out of high school wrote this book because it is beautifully written, keeps the reader intrigued, and has wonderful character development! I hope many have an opportunity to read this fabulous book!
Song of the Ëan creates an unique world with rich detail and descriptions. The empire of Edenia and the trials the people of Belond face become real with Nordberg’s carefully placed words. The book mirrors the writing style of the best of classic literature, and is an astounding accomplishment for someone her age. One of the most engaging points of the book is the way the plot is carefully crafted. The plot is intriguing with many unexpected twists and turns that weave a meaningful and stirring tale. The story continues to delight with each chapter. This is due to the multiple plot-lines that revolve around a rich cast of characters. The characters are deep and meaningful, and they mirror real life with their many faults and skills. The book excels in its ability to encompass numerous genres. There are elements of romance, military strategy, political intrigue, and spiritual growth in the text.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I love fantasy novels very much and this was a great addition to my collection. The characters are very well developed and I found myself affected by what happened to them in the book. It is very easy to become deeply immersed in the happenings at Belond. I highly recommend this book.
