Arnold Bennett was an English writer best known as a novelist, but he started working in journalism when he won a literary competition hosted by Tit-Bits magazine. Moving up in the world of journalism Bennett became the assistant editor and in short order the editor of the magazine. After leaving the magazine and giving up his editor post he committed himself to writing full time while still devoting time to journalism. During the war he became the Director of Propaganda for France as well as working in film. My mother is far too clever to understand anything she doesn't like ~ Arnold Bennett
The Author Craft Arnold Bennett 9780615864761 Books
The book, published in 1914, has the following sections/chapters: 1. Seeing Life 2. Writing Novels 3. Writing Plays 4. The Artist and the Public. The book is short, of about 130 pages. The drawback is the language it is written in; I found it a slow read, if not difficult. The writer does inform you and instruct you about how to and what to observe if you want to be a good writer. And then, he has genre-specific advice as well. And helpful advices at that.
You may like to read books that are recently published (for example, Bird by Bird) so that you would feel you are talking to someone who lives in the same world. Among the older books on writing that I love is Dorothy Brande's Becoming a Writer. It is a must read, written in a lucid language.

Great
Arnold Bennett covers his experiences as both playwright and novelist. Although he lived at the turn of the 20th Century, many of the things he learned as a working writer are still applicable in today's publishing world.
